St. George, UT - High-profile community members and grocery store executives donned construction hats and commemorated the start of the Smith’s Marketplaceconstruction at a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning.

The 123,000 square-foot supermarket is being developed at the center of the Dinosaur Crossing shopping development on the southwest corner of Mall and Riverside Drives.

Gregg McArthur, president of the St. George Chamber of Commerce, said the location is ideal because it’s an under-serviced area for grocery stores.

“Where most of the growth is happening is over here in the Washington Fields area,” McArthur said.

The marketplace is scheduled to open in early spring 2017, and Smith’s President Kenny Kimball said the investment for the site is close to $21 million. Wadman Corporation is the construction company building the store.
